Expressing concerns over arrests of 300 peasants in Punjab, Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari condemned Punjab police’s crackdown in the province to thwart the Kissan Dharna scheduled to be held in Lahore today.

Reports of police high-handedness against Pakistani Kissan Ittehad started coming in a day before it was to hold a sit-in.

The peasants had planned to stage a sit-in with a symbolic funeral of agricultural development in Punjab. “Instead of taking handcuffs, batons and shells to the poor farmers and peasants, the Punjab government should heed their demands and grievances and resolve them,” the chairman said in a statement issued on Tuesday.

Bilawal announced the PPP workers participation in the peaceful protest and warned the Pakistan Muslim League – N federal government to desist from such acts. “PPP and the people of the entire country stand in complete solidarity with the protesting farmers and peasants.”
