MULTAN: The Pakistan Kissan Ittehad (PKI) has expressed concerns over non-announcement of wheat support prices while the crop is being harvested.

Addressing a press conference at the Multan Press Club here on Monday, PKI President Khalid Khokhar said the price of wheat in the local market was currently very low, due to which the farmer was suffering. They will start their protest from Multan on April 12. Bread is being made cheaper by exploiting the farmer economically. The government has failed to control the price of sugar.

The government’s economic team has not consulted farmer organizations at any level. The production of rice, cotton, corn and other commodities in the country has also decreased. The government imports commodities at high prices but does not give proper compensation to local farmers for their crops.

He said if agriculture was strong, the economy would improve. Without the development of agriculture, the development of the country was not possible. Wheat growers are disturbed and unable to prepare for the next crop due to high expenses. Wheat prices have dropped from Rs 3,900 last year to Rs 2,200 per maund this season.
