The federal minister for planning, development and special initiatives, Ahsan Iqbal, on Friday paid a one-day visit to Karachi. In an engagement in the city, he emphasised the federal government’s commitment to national development and highlighted the recently launched economic transformation plan under the title of ‘Uraan Pakistan’.

He met notable figures, including Jam Karam Ali and Jam Kaim Ali at the Jam House, and addressed a gathering of dignitaries, diplomats and members of Sindh’s business community. Officials said the event was attended by the governors of Sindh and Balochistan, diplomats from China, Oman, United Arab Emirates, Russia, Turkiye, Iran and other friendly nations, alongside prominent business leaders such as Fazal Dadabhoy, chairman of the Dadabhoy Companies, Pakistan’s leading rice exporter Rehan Chawla and Asad Khan, renowned property tycoon from Dubai.

Local Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leaders commended the PML-N government and Iqbal for the launch of Uraan Pakistan based on the 5Es framework under the leadership of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

The federal planning and development minister highlighted that Uraan Pakistan was a transformative initiative designed for the people of Pakistan, focusing on creating an export-oriented economy, fostering a youth-driven techno-economy, addressing climate resilience, enhancing water and food security, promoting green energy and achieving equitable socioeconomic development by empowering youth and women.

He emphasised that the PML-N government prioritised the people's agenda and was committed to overcoming national challenges through policy reforms and strategic public expenditure. “Uraan Pakistan represents our commitment to empowering every citizen of Pakistan. We aim to provide opportunities for youth, digitise agriculture for farmers and significantly increase exports,” said Iqbal. “Our government is setting a strong economic foundation to ensure Pakistan’s global competitiveness and a prosperous future for generations to come.”

Reflecting on Karachi’s pivotal role in the country’s economic transformation, Iqbal highlighted key federal government initiatives, including mass transit systems, water supply projects, road development and housing schemes aimed at uplifting the socio-economic conditions of Sindh.

Later on, the federal planning and development minister held a press conference at the residence of Muzaffar Ali Shujra. During the media briefing, he recalled the PML-N’s achievements during its 2013-2018 tenure, including restoring peace in Karachi, resolving the energy crisis and enhancing road connectivity.

He reiterated the government’s dedication to addressing Karachi’s pressing challenges despite fiscal constraints. “Karachi is not just a city; it’s my home. We are determined to bring transformative change to this city and all of Sindh,” he stated.

Highlighting the broader vision of Uraan Pakistan, he said the world was economically competitive, and we must position Pakistan to excel on the global stage. “Our plan focuses on empowering youth, increasing exports, and fostering innovation in science, technology, and market share. The next five years will witness Pakistan surpassing milestones, and in 20 years, we aim to exceed regional benchmarks.” He concluded with saying that the Uraan Pakistan initiative would not only stabilise our economy but also lower inflation, reduce political instability, and create opportunities for all.
