Governor calls for updating education system

20th convocation of GIK held

SWABI: Governor Engr Iqbal Zafar Jhagra has said that Pakistanis can survive as a respectable nation if education system is updated in accordance with the requirements of the modern age.

Addressing as a chief guest at the 20th Convocation of Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute at Topi in Swabi district on Thursday, the governor stated that the role of engineers becomes significant in the present era.

He said the country had immense resources but needs honest, committed, competent and trained manpower to take up the task of national reconstruction.“I am convinced that part of the product that we require is coming out from this institute,” he said.

Among the total 338 graduates, seven won gold medals; Muhammad Arsalan achieved Ghulam Ishaq Khan Award and Talha Bin Asad got Quaid-e-Azam Gold Medal.

Besides, Rector Jehangir Bashar, the ceremony was also addressed by Engr Shamsul Mulk, president of the Society for Promotion of Engineering Sciences and Technology (SOPREST) and chairman of the Institute’s Board of Governors. The rector also presented the annual report of the Institute.

On the occasion, the governor announced Rs1 million for Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute and Rs10,000 each for gold medallists.

Appreciating the achievements of the GIK Institute, the governor said that great institutions are not made only of bricks merely, rather they are great due to high traditions of teaching and learning and the direction they give to the youth.

He added that corruption destroys the very vitals of social, political and economic systems in various societies, adding that educational institutions need to put extra efforts to curb the menace.
