Deadlock on ToRs aims to avoid accountability: Siraj
LAHORE: Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Senator Sirajul Haq said a deadlock on ToRs for a judicial commission was tantamount to avoiding accountability.
Addressing a meeting of the political committee of JI Punjab at Mansoora on Tuesday, he said since the Panama leaks had mentioned names of leaders of both the ruling party and the opposition, there was every possibility that the deadlock on ToRs would be further extended. He said accountability was the essence of democracy and the JI wanted an autonomous commission for fair accountability of everybody.
“We want to break the idol of corruption although some people are worshiping it. The JI wants an automatic system of accountability in which a corrupt person, howsoever powerful he may be, has to be in the dock and the impression that powerful people can escape accountability should end," he added.
The JI Ameer said the deadlock on ToRs was aimed at creating an impression among the people that in spite of the Panama leaks disclosure, nothing was going to happen and the whole matter would be dead within a few days. He was confident that it would not happen and plunderers would have to account for every penny of the public.
Meanwhile, Sirajul Haq contacted the prime minister’s son Husain Nawaz in London by telephone and enquired about his health. He also prayed for the health of the premier.
Earlier, before coming to Lahore, Sirajul Haq had an important meeting with Senate Chairman Mian Raza Rabbani in Islamabad and exchanged views with him on issues concerning the rule of the constitution, supremacy of the parliament and strengthening institutions. The two leaders underscored the need for making the Parliament the centre of policy making.
