Hundreds of tenants protest against arrest of leader

OKARA: Hundreds of tenants under the banner of the Anjuman-e-Mazareen Punjab (AMP) staged a demonstration against the arrest of association general secretary Mehr Abdus Sattar near Chak 4/4L on Sunday.
The protesters chanted slogans against the district administration, police and government. Addressing the protesters, Awami Workers Party general secretary Farooq Tariq, Punjab Women Wing president Nazli Javed, AWP Sindh general secretary Ammar Jan Khan, AMP Probinabad Farms president Muhammad Yaseen and AMP Kulyana State Women Wing president Badarun Nisa condemned the district administration for detaining AMP general secretary Mehr Abdus Sattar. They demanded release of Abdus Sattar and other tenants.
Earlier, AMP general secretary Mehr Abdus Sattar had announced observing the International Day of Peasants on Sunday. To it, District Coordination Officer Sucrat Aman Rana, keeping the security situation in view, had asked him not to hold the meeting at an open place, but he did not listen to him. On Saturday, police on the orders of the DCO arrested tenants’ leader Abdus Sattar.
Meanwhile, AMP media adviser Noor Nabi advocate claimed that police had also arrested tenants, including Abdur Rashid, Muhammad Mushtaq of Chak 24/4L, Ghulam Muhammad of Chak 46/3R, Muhammad Iqbal and Allah Rakha of Chak 9/4L, Niamat Ali of Chak 12/4L, Asghar Ali and Attiq of Chak 3/4L, Muhammad Hussain of Chak 4/4L, Muhammad Ashraf of Chak 15/4L and Sughran Bibi of Chak 29/4L, on Saturday.
