Siraj for SC suo motu of offshore money
LAHORE
Jamaat e Islami Ameer Senator Sirajul Haq demanded the Supreme Court to take suo motu of the wealth of present and past rulers in offshore companies and award exemplary punishment to plunderers of public money.
Talking to delegations at Mansoora on Tuesday, he said details of properties of politicians and their kith and kin given by the Panama Leaks had stunned the nation. He said every government had obtained huge loans from the IMF and World Bank at high interest rate and the burden of the loans was passed on the common man in the form of raise in taxes and utilities charges. He said that the amount of foreign loans was transferred abroad and invested there.
He said that if the money invested abroad was earned lawfully, there was no reason to hide it from the public eye. Those building offshore businesses to evade taxes have no right to expect the masses to pay taxes, he added. Sirajul Haq stressed that all those holding high public offices should be barred from carrying on private business because they were likely to use their official positions to expand private businesses. He said it was astonishing that while the private businesses of the rulers and their families were expanding miraculously, national institutions were going down. He alleged criminals and dacoits had become masters of the nation’s fate by virtue of the NRO and added that people had no right to the rule the country unless they mended their ways. Sirajul Haq said JI’s corruption-free Pakistan drive was becoming a national movement and he was sure that in the present situation, the plunderers and dacoits would be forced to quit politics. He said it was irony that the rulers were inviting foreigners to invest in Pakistan. He said if they were sincere with the nation and the country, they should bring their wealth here and invest in the country.
