Balochistan has become volcano: Siraj
Says courts, democracy made hostage; holds corrupt elite responsible for country’s decline

RAHIM YAR KHAN: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Ameer Sirajul Haq has said that Balochistan has turned into a volcano, and if the issue was left to be resolved by the bureaucracy and Islamabad, another “fall of Dhaka” could take place.
He said that rather than any other country, the government and leaders were responsible for the circumstances prevailing in Balochistan.He said the corrupt elite, not the poor masses, are responsible for the country’s decline.
Addressing a workers convention and district bar at a local hotel, the JI Ameer said that corruption amounting to Rs1,500 billion took place every year.He said that the biggest problem of Pakistan was absence of supremacy of law and disregard for merit. He remarked that courts, politics and democracy had been held hostage, and the country was affected not only by armed terrorism but also economic and political terrorism.
He said that he respected the lawyers because Pakistan was founded by a lawyer. He said that political parties had turned into “properties”, because of which the system, democracy and politics could not progress. He said a country in which democracy could not flourish could not prosper. He opined that there was a need to strengthen democracy in the country.
He noted that before the 21st Amendment, an experiment of Protection of Pakistan Ordinance was carried out. All these experiments were tests for the present government, he said. He opined that if they would not rise above personal and party-based interests, neither atomic bomb nor F-16s could be of any use.
He claimed that if he got an opportunity, he would start civil services exams in Urdu. He demanded of the Election Commission to give a certificate to each candidate showing whether he had given due share in his property to his wife, daughter and sister or not. He said the man who could not give a part of his property to his sister, wife or daughter, could not give rights to the women of the country.
He promised that if the JI came into the government, it would start free treatment of cancer, jaundice, heart diseases, kidney and Thalassemia and families whose monthly income was less than Rs30,000 would be given atta, pulses, ghee, sugar and rice on subsidised rates.
