Dear Ed,

In the issue of 10 January, I read with great interest the cover story, ‘Literature’s role in shaping social ideas,’ by Izza Rauf. While I agree with the writer’s views, I believe she should have also explored the consequences of writers expressing their views. For instance, I would like to mention the witch hunt led by an FBI director to punish those who believed in the Communist Manifesto. During the Red Scare in the United States (1940s–1950s), individuals suspected of communist sympathies were targeted by the government, particularly under the direction of FBI director J. Edgar Hoover. This often involved accusations, investigations, and blacklisting, even without concrete evidence, mirroring the hysteria and persecution of the Salem witch trials.

I also liked the review of The Space Man by Maheen Zeeshan (reviewed by Muhammad Omar Iftikhar). It’s always good to come across books written by local writers, and it seems the plot has the potential to inspire our young people to follow their dreams. All in all, it was a good issue.

Hey Ed,

My favorite section is ‘Poets’ Corner’, but I was disappointed not to find Amna Ameer’s poem there this time (10 January issue). However, my disappointment quickly turned to delight when I spotted and read her article, ‘A year of resting’. Amna is my favourite poet, and her articles are just as captivating and thought-provoking as her poems.

Deforestation – a serious threat to our eco system

Dear Editor,

I am writing to express my deep concern about the rampant deforestation occurring across our planet. This alarming phenomenon not only threatens the rich biodiversity of our ecosystems but also poses a grave risk to our environment and future generations.

Forests, often referred to as the lungs of the Earth, are being relentlessly stripped away, leaving behind barren landscapes that struggle to sustain life. The consequences of deforestation are catastrophic: countless species face extinction, climate change accelerates, and greenhouse gas emissions increase.

The loss of these vital ecosystems has far-reaching impacts, including rising sea levels, extreme weather events, and disrupted agricultural patterns. It is imperative that we take immediate action to halt deforestation and protect our forests.

We must advocate for sustainable practices, support reforestation initiatives, and hold corporations accountable for their environmental impact. The time to act is now; the health of our planet and the well-being of future generations depend on it.
