For the last of couple years, Warner Bros. has been trying to find a way to get back into The Matrix universe. Though rumours have been circulating since 2017 that the fourth installment of Matrix is in the works, recently Warner Bros. chairman, Toby Emmerich made the official announcement that Matrix 4 is well underway.

In the upcoming action franchise, actors Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss will be reprising their roles as Neo and Trinity, respectively, while co-creator and director of The Matrix, Lana Wachowski is all set to write, helm and produce the new project.

According to Emmerich, they could not be more excited to be re-entering The Matrix with Lana. “She is a true visionary — a singular and original creative filmmaker — and we are thrilled that she is writing, directing and producing this new chapter in The Matrix universe,” noted Emmerich.

“Many of the ideas Lilly [Lana’s sister] and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now,” said Wachowski. “I’m very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends.”

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the original Matrix, which told the story of the hacker Neo and his discovery that the world was in fact a simulated reality. The three previous films – The Matrix; The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions – have collectively earned more than $1.6 billion at the global box office.

Though the plot details are currently unknown, all we know is that the film will begin production in 2020.
