The much awaited UK Asian Film Festival opened with a gala dinner on March 14 at the Mayfair Hotel in London and featured our very own Mahira Khan as a special guest. The event paid tribute to women who have challenged stereotypes, broken barriers and pushed boundaries to make a difference. One of them was Mahira Khan, who has been raising her voice on various issues and has represented Pakistan on multiple global fronts. She has been honoured with the Flame Award for her contribution to film and activism.

Aside from her, others who received the award include British actor Amy Jackson, veteran British television, theatre and film actor and activist Jamila Massey, author and campaigner Rahila Gupta, and legendary actress and talk show hostess Simi Garewal. These women discussed films, women empowerment and much more at the opening dinner.

Speaking on the occasion, Mahira expressed the desire to make films and “give happiness a chance” while she also talked about her recent release, Verna that is scheduled to screen at the festival today.

Currently in London, the actor also attended the world premiere of Cake that features Aamina Sheikh, Adnan Malik and Sanam Saeed in key roles, all of whom were present on the occasion. She took to Twitter to share her views on the film that has the honour of being the first Pakistani film to premiere at London’s Leicester Square.

“Take a bow, take that delicious piece of cake; you guys have made and run with it! Woof!” Mahira posted. “The acting, direction, cinematography, the production design, the styling, theeee film!”

The actor is gearing up for her next, 7 Din Mohabbat In in which she is joined by Sheheryar Munawar. It is scheduled to release on Eid ul Fitr, this year.
