We’re in the midst of another award season and while the 2018 edition of the Lux Style Awards, the most prestigious contemporary award ceremony in Pakistan, is set to take place next month in Lahore, in Bollywood and Hollywood, some award ceremonies have come and gone.

One case in point is the recently held 24th edition of the Screen Actors Guild Awards, which celebrated the best of television and film. The 2018 edition picked roughly the same winners who were recognized by the Golden Globes 2018 earlier this year.

In film, small town drama Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri won big including outstanding performance by a cast in a theatrical motion picture, best female actor in a leading role for Frances McDormand and best performance by a male actor in a supporting role for Sam Rockwell.

Gary Oldman won best male actor in a leading role for Darkest Hour while Allison Janney picked up the trophy for best female actor in a supporting role for I, Tonya.

In television, Big Little Lies and This Is Us won big as well, much like their run during the 2018 edition of the Golden Globes. Alexander Skarsgard and Nicole Kidman won in leading acting category for a television movie or miniseries while This Is Us picked up best performance by a male actor in a drama series for Sterling K. Brown as well as the nod for best performance by an ensemble in a drama series.

Apart from the winners, this year’s ceremony was female-focused with Kirsten Bell being the first ever host and all presenters being female.

Though Bell poked fun at others, her monologue also had room for empathy. “Everyone’s story deserves to be told, especially now,” she said. “We are living in a watershed moment and as we march forward, let’s make sure we’re leading the charge with empathy and diligence, because fear and anger never win the race.”

#MeToo and Time’s Up resonated as SAG-AFTRA president Gabrielle Carteris stated, “Truth is power and women are stepping into their power. Make no mistake, this is not a moment in time, this is a movement.”

Nicole Kidman, while accepting her award, shared it with co-stars Laura Dern and Reese Witherspoon before stating: “I just beg that the industry stays behind us because our stories are finally being told and it’s only the beginning.”

Allison Janney, accepting the SAG Award for her role in I, Tonya, celebrated the other women in the room. She noted: “It’s incredibly emotional to be in this category of great women I love so much,“ she noted, before going onto praise her co-nominees for their “brilliant” performances.

Sam Rockwell also paid tribute to women including his co-star Frances McDormand while accepting best supporting actor trophy. “I’m in awe of McDormand and I stand shoulder to shoulder with you and all the incredible women in this room for trying to make things better,” Rockwell said. “It’s long overdue.”
