“I think much of beauty advertising relies on a false premise – that women need to be treated in an infantile way, given a ‘fantasy’ to aspire to… Real women are already inspired by other real women, so perhaps beauty advertising needs to get on board.” These words said by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie can make one fall in love with the author and feminist speaker in an instant

as the new face of Boots No7 make-up.

“I think much of beauty advertising relies on a false premise – that women need to be treated in an infantile way, given a ‘fantasy’ to aspire to… Real women are already inspired by other real women, so perhaps beauty advertising needs to get on board.” These words said by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie can make one fall in love with the author and feminist speaker in an instant.

This was Adichie’s interview in Vogue’s November 2016 Real Issue, in “The New Face Of Beauty: You,” which goes to show that the fact that someone like Adichie is slowly becoming fashion’s favourite icon is something worth celebrating. It started off when Adichie’s viral TED talks were sampled by Beyonce and were also the point of focus in Maria Grazia Chiuri’s debut collection as Dior’s creative director. Now, the author will be the face of Boot’s No7 make up line and the campaign will be launched on print, digital and electronic media.

For those of us who are sometimes afraid of admitting our love for make-up, you can take comfort in the fact that a celebrated feminist used to be afraid of professing her love for make up, in case she was taken less  seriously for it. She has finally come to embrace make up as a tool which she uses to enhance her identity.

“I love make-up and its wonderful possibilities for temporary transformation. And I also love my face after I wash it all off,” said Adichie. “There is something exquisitely enjoyable about seeing yourself with a self-made new look. And for me that look is deeply personal. It isn’t about what is in fashion or what the rules are supposed to be. It’s about what I like. What makes me want to smile when I look in the mirror. What makes me feel slightly better on a dull day. What makes me comfortable.”
