UN Women Goodwill Ambassador and founder of the HeforShe initiative, Emma Watson raised many issues at her recent address to the UN, where she was present to introduce the He for She 10x10x10 impact report, the first progress report since 10 global universities announced their commitment last summer to achieve gender parity in their schools by 2020.
She stressed on the importance of addressing the issue of sexual assault that takes place on college campuses, explaining that for women to be empowered enough to reach leadership positions, colleges have to be a safe place of learning for everyone. She also demanded sexual violence to be recognized as an act of violence and not as a feminist issue.
“The university experience must tell women that their brainpower is valued, and not just that, but that they belong within the leadership of the university itself.” Watson also added that the experience must make it clear that the safety of women, minorities, and anyone who may be vulnerable, is a right, not a privilege, a right that will be respected by a community that believes and supports survivors, and that recognizes that when one person’s safety is violated, everyone feels their own safety is violated.
