Thailand's consumer watchdog said ‌it will sue Meta's platform 'Facebook' for allowing scammers to use the social media platform to defraud the public through ‌ads and failing to protect its users.

The council reports that scammers frequently use the platform to impersonate well-known figures and sell fake, substandard, or dangerous products.

The TCC alleges that Facebook has failed to adequately protect users from fraudulent content, illegal advertisements, and scams.

The Thai watchdog is representing 10 consumers who were victims of fraudulent activity on the platform, involving financial losses totaling 230 million baht.

The TCC accuses Meta of failing to apply the same level of strict content screening and consumer protection in Thailand and other Southeast Asian nations as it does in regions like the United States, Europe, and Australia.

This legal development occurs alongside separate, broader efforts involving Meta and Thai law enforcement.

As of June 2026, Zuckerberg's Meta has participated in joint operations with the Royal Thai Police, the US Department of Justice and other international partners to disrupt criminal scam networks in Southeast Asia, resulting in the removal of over 1.4 million accounts, pages and groups across Instagram and Facebook.

Moreover, Thailand's Consumer Council previously reached out to Meta in November 2024, sending a letter to CEO Mark Zuckerberg with specific recommendations to improve scam prevention policies in Thailand.

As a result, the TCC council stated that they resorted to legal action because Meta’s response to these recommendations was unsatisfactory.

TCC is preparing the first-ever legal action of this nature against social media and tech giant 'Meta.

Notably, the lawsuit will be filed in the Civil Court against Facebook, its parent company Meta, and 16 other defendants.
