Sarwan not worried about captaincy issue

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados: Batsman Ramnaresh Sarwan says he is not worried over whether he or Chris Gayle is West Indies captain as he steps up his bid to return to international cricket soon and produce consistently.

He said resuming his international career is his main priority right now, even ahead of reclaiming West Indies captaincy. “It doesn’t really matter whether I am the captain or not or whether Chris is the captain. I just want to start back playing international cricket and performing consistently, trying to assist team in best way I can,” Sarwan added.

Dogged by one injury or another in the past couple of years and even more telling since he was appointed captain for England tour in 2007 following Brian Lara’s retirement, he has not played a Test match in eight months — since badly damaging his right shoulder while chasing a ball to boundary in second match at Headingley, Leeds last May.

He indicated that he was still feeling a bit of pain and soreness in ankle while batting. “It’s coming around okay. It’s pretty steady. It’s coming on slowly but surely. It is just I am a bit disappointed that I am not at a stage where I want to be, where I can compete at international level.

“I am just hoping in two weeks time I should be fit and be able to compete at highest level,” said Sarwan, a veteran of 67 Tests and 124 one-dayers. After completing five-match one-day series in South Africa on February 3, West Indies next international engagements are at home against Sri Lanka starting in late March with two Tests and three one-dayers before taking on world champions Australia in three Tests, one Twenty20 and five one-dayers between May 22 and July 6.
