ANP nominates candidates from Karachi

January 1, 2008

For the first time ever, the Awami National Party (ANP) has nominated 15 candidates from Karachi for National Assembly and Sindh Assembly seats, and the party leadership is quite optimistic about their chances. Pushto-speaking people in the city are flocking to the ANP’s red flags — symbols of revolution — so that they can stand up for their rights and bring a change in their lives, ANP activists maintained.

“We do not have an accurate number of pukhtoon-speaking voters in Karachi. We do know, however, that they live all over the city,” ANP Sindh general secretary, Amin Khattak, told The News.

“We are more united and organized than ever before and will prove our strength through this election. We want to be a parliamentary party,” ANP Information Secretary Iqbal Buneri said. “It is still too early to predict results, but we are hopeful that we will win seats in PS-93, PS-128, and PS-129, because we are in a good position in these constituencies.”

Meanwhile, the ANP and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) have concluded seat adjustments on two NA seats and four PS seats in the city. An ANP spokesman said that the provincial leadership will brief the media about further development in the context of the elections soon. The party has nominated Zarb Ali Syed for NA-241, covering SITE and Orangi town areas, Juma Khan Babar for NA-245 covering District Central, Paposh and Nusrat Bhutto colony, Farooq Bungash for NA-250, covering areas of Saddar, Hijrat Colony, Railway Colony and Burns Road, Shazia Batool for NA-256 covering areas of Shah Faisal Colony, Pehlwan Goth, Natha Khan etc, Sultan Mando Khel for NA-257 covering Qaidabad neighbourhood.

The ANP’s candidates for provincial assembly seats include Ameer Nawab for PS-93, Site Town, Ameer Nawab Charagzai for PS-96 covering Qasba Colony and Manghopir areas, Khalid Khan for PS-112 covering Hijrat Colony, Sheerin Jinnah Colony and parts of Saddar, Saeed Khan for PS-125

covering Korangi areas, Amanullah Khan Masood for PS-128 covering Landhi Industrial areas, Zarbali Syed for PS129 covering Qaidabad and fishermen localities, Waseem Maswani for PS-130 covering Gulshan-e-Hadeed, Steel Township and neighbouring areas.

Since the ANP is a parliamentary party having strong roots in the NWFP, it has Political analysts said that a large number of the pukhtoons are settled in Karachi but the ANP has not been able to gather them on one platform because they are unorganised. The party has, however, worked to get over this roadblock for the January 08 elections.
