November 3, 2007

KARACHI: A flurry of missed chances in the second half denied Habib Bank Limited (HBL) the opportunity to register a win against Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) as the match of the Fourth Pakistan Premier Football League between the two traditional rivals ended in a 1-1 draw here at the Peoples Football Stadium on Friday.

Habib Bank, played in some excellent football especially in the second half, but failed to take the decisive lead thanks to some poor finishing from the frontline. In the 63rd minute, HBL’s substitute Bilal Ahmad found the right-winger Zakir Lashari on the top left corner, but he was unable to tap the ball in the vacant goal.

Soon after Habib Bank’s Ishtiaq and Bilal Ahmad created a combined movement, but Ishtiaq failed to finish the move. A couple of minutes later young Ishtiaq’s kick went straight to the goalie’s gloves.

PIA, enjoyed the services of international striker Shakir Lashari, Imran Khan and Abdul Jabbar, but all of them failed miserably. Though, Lashari strived twice in the dying moments with forceful shots, but HBL’s goalkeeper Aqeel Ahmad splendidly foiled all his attempts with professional ease.

Naeem Zaidi supervised the match while Iqbal Junior and Fareed Ahmad served as line judges. Abrar Hussain was the fourth official. Former international Yousuf Senior served as match commissioner while Iqbal Senior acted as referees’ inspector.

In the second match of the day (Friday), played at Jinnah Stadium Islamabad, Pakistan WAPDA thrashed Pakistan Television (PTV) by 3-0. Today’s fixtures: Army v Wohaib FC (Army Sports Complex, Rawalpindi), KRL v PMC (KRL Stadium), KPT v Afghan FC (KMC Stadium Karachi).
