December 3, 2014

MIRANSHAH: Thirty militants were killed in air and ground offensives in North Waziristan and the Khyber tribal agencies on Tuesday.
Military authorities claimed to have killed 17 militants, including foreigners, in the North Waziristan Agency. The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) issued a brief statement to the media and said that 17 militants were killed in air strikes in North Waziristan.
It, however, didn’t mention where these militants were killed in North Waziristan. Also as usual, the ISPR didn’t disclose the identity of the slain militants. However, other security officials said the fighter jets pounded suspected positions of militants in Ismailkhel, Lataka and Zarama villages in the Dattakhel subdivision of the troubled North Waziristan and inflicted losses on the militants there.
After clearing two major residential towns, Mir Ali and Miranshah, of the militants, security forces have been engaged in fierce clashes with militants in Dattakhel, close to the Afghan border, for the past two months.
Both sides had suffered heavy losses in clashes going on for the control of Dattakhel.Due to a difficult terrain, the military mostly preferred fighter jets and helicopter gunships in their fight against the militants in Dattakhel and its adjoining Shawal Valley.
AFP adds from Peshawar: An intelligence official told AFP that five Uzbek and two Haqqani network militants were among those killed in the air strikes. The North Waziristan operation began in mid-June, when jets and artillery began targetingrebel strongholds before ground forces moved in.
The army says it has killed more than 1,100 militants and lost more than 100 soldiers since the start of the operation.Munir Khan Afridi adds from Bara: Thirteen militants, including two commanders, were killed and several others sustained injuries in a clash after an attack on a check post of security forces in the Akakhel area of Tirah Valley of Khyber Agency, official sources claimed.
The

sources said the militants belonging to the Lashkar-e-Islam and Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (Tariq group) attacked the checkpost from two directions in Dars Jumaat area in the Tirah Valley.
They said security forces repulsed the attack and killed 13 militants, including two commanders of the TTP identified as Munazam and Atlas Khan Afridi.Several militants were wounded in the clash, the sources claimed, adding the soldiers manning the checkpost remained unhurt in the attack.
The checkpost is located in a remote area in Tirah Valley on the boundary with Orakzai Agency. The militants killed eight soldiers and injured 15 others in attacks on checkposts in the same area in recent past.
The militants have been driven out of several areas in Bara in the ongoing ‘Operation Khyber-1’. The Shalobar, Akakhel and Malikdinkhel Afridi tribes have also expelled militants from their ranks.Meanwhile, the militants set on fire the house of a peace committee member Zarwali Khan in the Dars Jumat area in Akakhel.
