10 militants, soldier killed in Khyber, Orakzai

BARA/ KALAYA: Ten militants, five civilians and one soldier were killed in clashes and shelling in the Khyber and Orakzai tribal agencies and the Peshawar district on Sunday, official sources said.
Five militants and a soldier were killed in a clash in the Khyber Agency. Sources said fighter aircraft pounded the hideouts of Lashkar-e-Islam (LI) while security forces clashed with the militants in the Akakhel area.
Sources said a soldier and five militants affiliated with the LI were killed in the clash.Up to 60 militants have been killed in the Operation Khyber-1 in the last one week. The identities of the dead and injured could not be ascertained.
Meanwhile, three civilians, including two women, were killed and five others sustained injuries when mortar shells fired from unknown location hit houses. Two persons, a woman among them, were killed when a mortar shell hit a house in the Daroadda area in Akakhel, sources said. One person was killed in another firing incident.
Sources said Muhammad Ali along his friend was on his way home from Alamgudar when unidentified people fired at them, killing Muhammad Ali on the spot while his friend sustained injuries.
In the neighbouring Orakzai Agency, five militants were killed when security forces pounded their hideouts in the mountains in lower parts of the tribal agency with heavy weapons.
Sources said the militants fired 10 rockets from the mountain peaks in Shireen Darra and one of the shells landed close to the Levies Force check post adjacent to the Headquarters Chowk. A civilian identified as Din Gul died and four Levies soldiers sustained injuries in the attack. The injured soldiers were identified as Tariq, Khushdil Khan, Anwar Khan and Muhammad Habib.
Security forces, sources said, used heavy weapons to target the hideouts of militants in the mountainous Shireen Darra and Khwa Darra areas after the rocket attack. Five militants were killed and four of their hideouts were destroyed in the shelling, sources claimed.
Earlier on Saturday, six personnel of security forces and 18 militants were killed in a clash in the Shireen Darra area.Peshawar Bureau adds: A man was killed when a mortar shell landed at a house in the Sheikhan village near the boundary with the Khyber Agency.
It was learnt that a mortar shell landed in the limits of the Badaber Police Station, killing one person and causing slight damage to the house.Also, police claimed to have arrested nine militants during a search operation in the limits of Badaber and Matani police stations. The arrested men were said to be involved in several attacks.
