US drone hits Taliban meeting in NWA, 20 killed

BANNU: A US drone strike on Wednesday killed around 20 people in a suspected militant compound in the Zwe Saidgai area of North Waziristan Agency.
“A US drone fired two missiles targeting a militant compound in Zwe Saidgai area, killing at least 18 insurgents,” a senior security official in Miranshah, the main town of North Waziristan, told AFP.
The official said there had been reports of militants moving to Zwe Saidgai from Miranshah and Mir Ali, the other main town in the area, after the start of the army operation Zarb-e-Azb.Another security official said as many as 20 people may have been killed in the strike, 12 of them Uzbeks. He said the attack took place at around 2:00am while an important meeting was going on in the compound.
More than 800,000 people have been forced to flee from North Waziristan by the military operation, with most ending up in the nearby Bannu district. There have been fears that many top militants also fled. —AFP
Our Miranshah correspondent adds: Locals in the Dattakhel area of North Waziristan said it was around 2:30am when they heard heavy explosions.They said villagers later in the morning brought six injured people to a local health facility in the main town and told them that they had been injured in a drone attack.
The locals said the injured people were spending the night at a mosque when the drone fired missiles. “Twelve people were killed at one place and eight others at another mosque,” a tribesman said.
He said those who took theinjured to the doctors told them that the drones had targeted two mosques in Zwe Saidgai situated about 60 kilometres west of Miranshah.Pakistani security officials said it was second drone strike in Zwe Saidgai in July.According to them, seven people, including four Arabs and three local militants, were killed and three others injured when the drone hit a suspected hideout in same area a few days ago.
