WHO declares Lahore high-risk for poliovirus

LAHORE: The World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared Lahore high-risk district for poliovirus concentration as two environmental samples in the city’s different areas have been confirmed positive for poliovirus.
The World Health Organization collected environmental samples from culverts in Karim Park and Sanda in the month of June and were declared positive for poliovirus during laboratory tests. The WHO authorities have advised the Health Department to take preventive measures to stop the proliferation of poliovirus in the city.
Earlier, it is worth mentioning that as many as 11 environmental samples, including nine from Lahore and two from Rawalpindi, have already been confirmed positive for poliovirus in the Punjab during the current year.
The Health Department has proposed a one-day special anti-polio drive, which will be conducted in 23 most affected union councils on July 16, 2014. Besides, a full anti-polio drive will be conducted all over Lahore in August and seven such anti-polio campaigns will be conducted in Lahore till September 29.
