KALAYA: Seventeen militants were killed in a fire-fight and a car bomb explosion when the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) fighters attacked the headquarters of a rival group led by Maulana Nabi Hanafi in the Bulandkhel area of Orakzai Agency, official and local sources said on Thursday.
The sources said three TTP militants entered the centre of the Nabi Hanafi Karwan in Spin Thall locality in the Bulandkhel area in Orakzai Agency after killing six militants of the splinter group, who were guarding the main gate of the building.
Two of the attackers were also killed in the fire-fight while the third managed to explode his suicide vest, the sources said, adding that the fourth attacker who was driving an explosive-laden car drove into the centre after the killing of the guards.
“The suicide bomber rammed his explosive-laden vehicle into the main building, razing it to the ground and killing seven more militants,” the sources added.
The sources said the centre, adjacent mosque and eight houses in the vicinity were destroyed in the blast in which more than 22 persons, including Maulana Nabi Hanafi, the commander of the Nabi Hanafi Karwan group, sustained injuries. The injured were taken to local hospitals. Some of them were later shifted to hospitals in Kohat and Peshawar owing to their critical condition.
The spokesman for the TTP, Shahidullah Shahid, claimed responsibility for the attack. He said Nabi Hanafi was attacked because he was a pro-government commander. A militant of the Nabi Hanafi group told reporters that Maulana Nabi Hanafi had suffered minor bullet injuries and would recover soon.
The official sources said that the injured included women and children, adding that 600 kilogrammes of explosives were used in the explosion.Maulana Nabi Hanafi formed his own group after developing differences with the TTP chief Hakimullah Mehsud. The TTP has targeted his headquarters in the past as well. Eleven persons were killed in a suicide attack

on the same complex of the Nabi Hanafi group two years ago.
