KARACHI: Muhammad Abid Ilyas, a former UC Nazim of the Jamaat-e-Islami, was shot dead by unknown armed men in the Nazimabad area late on Thursday night.
Police said that unknown attackers riding on a motorcycle opened fire at the car of Ilyas, 40, near Printing Press Market in the limits of Gulbahar police station, Nazimabad No 2. As a result, he died on the spot. His body was shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for medico-legal formalities. JI leader Muhammad Hussain Mehanti and workers rushed to the hospital and strongly condemned the killing of Ilyas. Mehanti said that Ilyas’s house was attacked a few days ago. He said that the killing was aimed at stopping the ongoing protests against poll rigging in Karachi. He said that the protest would continue despite threats.
JI Secretary Information Zahid Askari said that the deceased was a local leader of the JI and former UC Nazim of Liaquatabad Town. He said that Ilyas, a resident of Nazimabad, was associated with the construction business.
