ISLAMABAD: Chairman National Database and Registration Authority says that Nadra is ready to help out the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on verification of thumb impressions of voters in the constituencies where the political parties are claiming rigging took place.
In an exclusive interview with ‘The News’, Nadra Chairman Tariq Malik said that his organisation was ready to render all sorts of services to strengthen the ECP. However, the consent and request of the ECP in this regard would be first required.
He said that Nadra could verify the thumb impressions on the votes cast in any constituency and match it with the voters’ thumb impressions already in the Nadra database. However, he maintained that Nadra would have to upgrade its system and would need some time. He did not give any specific timeframe for this up-gradation but was hopeful that he could help the ECP in this verification.
Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf Chief Imran Khan also demanded the verification of thumb impressions of voters in 25 constituencies. Well-placed sources in Nadra disclosed that the verification of thumb impression was the last resort. However, the foul play being cried by the political leaders could be sorted out by verification of national identity card numbers against which the votes had been polled by the voters.
The sources said that the Presiding Officers at each polling station had manually registered the CNIC number of each voter against each ballot issued, therefore, Nadra could verify whether such CNIC was registered in that constituency or not and even the fact that the said voter was registered at the polling station where his vote had been cast.
Tariq Malik said that Nadra could also do verification of CNICs issued against each ballot and whether that voter was registered at that polling station or not but for that, the manual data had to be digitised. “I can send data entry operators to the ECP for that if they want and in the other case

they can also provide us with the record of each polling station and we can verify that but we need some time for it,” said the chairman Nadra.
Tariq Malik held that the system of Nadra was state-of-the-art and it had eliminated all the dual votes from the electoral rolls. He said that for verification of CNICs against each ballot, again Nadra should be allowed to procure systems so that it could upgrade them and help the ECP in sorting out the rigging issues.
