Afghan minister sees Pakistan as natural training ground for Afghan army

February 1, 2013

ISLAMABAD: Afghan Defence Minister General Bismillah Khan termed Pakistan as a natural destination for training of Afghan National Security Forces.
“Thousands of Afghans are studying in civil institutions of Pakistan and attaining various degrees,” said General Khan during a visit of the Afghan defence delegation to one of the training institutions and facilities of Pakistan Army. “Many of Afghans are graduating from Pakistan as doctors and engineers,” he said.
Under such circumstances, Pakistan could be a natural destination for the ANSF personnel, too, he said. The Afghan defence delegation visited a number of training institutions and facilities of Pakistan Army. Military sources say that the Afghan delegates were impressed by the standard of training and questioned training of their forces by the Western countries in the presence of these facilities in Pakistan.
They appreciated the fact that the operational environment of Pakistan and Afghanistan was identical, hence, Pakistan provided for a natural professional training destination for Afghan officers and soldiers.
The Afghan delegation also highlighted the fact that the female members of ANSF were reluctant to go to any other country other than Pakistan. They said following this visit, it appears that Afghanistan has come to realise the centrality of Pakistan in peace and stability in Afghanistan. Border control methods also came under discussion and both sides agreed to continue high level exchanges to conclude various issues of common interest.
The delegates include Lieutenant General Baz Mohammad Jawhari, Deputy Defence Minister for Personnel Affairs and Training Major General Afzal Aman, Director General Military Operations Abdul Manan Farahi, Director General Military Intelligence and Investigation Payanda Mohammad Nazim, Inspector General Training Ministry of Defence Aminullah Karim, Commandant National Defence College, US Colonel Dan Pinnel.
