PESHAWAR: A popular gastroenterologist and Pakistan People’s Party president for Kurram Agency Dr Syed Riaz Hussain was shot dead in an apparent target killing outside his clinic in Dabgari Gardens on Wednesday.
Dr Riaz Hussain, who contested and lost the last general elections from constituency NA-37, Parachinar and was serving as PPP Kurram Agency chief for the last several years, was coming to his clinic in the Khyber Medical Centre just opposite the office of the deputy superintendent of police (DSP) suburb, when armed men opened fire on his car near the Mission Hospital.
Reports said the two attackers escaped from the scene on a motorbike. Dr Riaz was taken to the Lady Reading Hospital in a critical condition but he succumbed to his injuries. The local police lodged a first information report against unknown assailants.
Since Dr Riaz had previously escaped two attempts on his life, it is believed that he became victim of the target killing. At least 61 people were killed and over 250 wounded when a suicide bomber rammed his explosive-laden car at his election office in Parachinar just two days before the general elections in 2008. In another incident, he sustained injuries when his car was targetted with a remote-controlled bomb the same year.
Dr Riaz belonged to an influential family of Kurram Agency. One of his brothers Syed Qaisar Hussain served as acting air chief marshal of the Pakistan Air Force, another brother Syed Irshad Hussain remained additional inspector general of police while Syed Zulfiqar Hussain served in the army. One of his brothers Dr Syed Mujahid Hussain is his identical twin.
The slain politician and senior doctor was born on May 11, 1959 and was a graduate of the Khyber Medical College. He had specialized in gastroenterology and practiced at his private clinic located in Dabgari Gardens. He is survived by his widow and three sons.
