Govt departments, army gas defaulter of billions of rupees

ISLAMABAD: At a time when the Sui Southern and Sui Northern gas companies are approaching the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) to increase the gas tariff and their consumers are facing load management, the government has presented a report in the National Assembly listing major private companies and government departments which were defaulters to gas companies. The findings are staggering, to say the least.
The report, presented Monday, reveals that government departments like Pakistan Steel, Wapda, Pakistan Railways, Prisons of Karachi and Hyderabad, different departments of the army, Prime Minister’s Secretariat and Parliament House are among defaulters of billion of rupees.
The report lists 313 private companies, power generating companies, major private industrial units, CNG stations and major government departments like Railways, Army, Wapda and even the Parliament House, as owning these companies more than Rs75 billion.
The report was presented by Advisor to PM on petroleum and natural resources, Dr Asim Hussain, in response to a question by PML-N legislator Shireen Arshad Khan who asked for the names and addresses of companies and persons who were defaulters of more than Rs10 million.
