DERA GHAZI KHAN: Punjab Chief Minister Mian Shahbaz Sharif Sunday said the PML-N would use public pressure to bring back the wealth of President Asif Ali Zardari from Swiss accounts.
Addressing a gathering at Dhool Abreend model village in Union Council Jhoke Utra after handing over the keys of houses to flood-hit families on Sunday, he said the agricultural and industrial sectors were facing heavy losses due to the worst-ever incidence of loadshedding.
Earlier, talking to newsmen after inaugurating the second phase of Watan cards, he said the country was passing through a critical juncture and PML-N leaders would sacrifice their lives for the cause of the motherland. The chief minister said 25,000 flood-hit families of the district would be provided Rs20,000 each through Watan cards. He said the flood-hit families could not be compensated through this meager amount but their hardships could at least be minimised.
Shahbaz said 22 model villages had been constructed in the province at a cost of Rs1.5 billion and announced upgrading Kot Chutta as the tehsil headquarters. He said he would visit Dera Ghazi Khan after two or three weeks for the groundbreaking ceremony of the medical college and announced that a sum of Rs550 million had been allocated for the project. He also gave a cheque of Rs500,000 to Kareem Bakhsh, the father of nurse Asma Kanwal who died of dengue fever in Lahore, and offered a job to her sister.
INP adds from Chiniot: Shahbaz Sharif took serious notice of the Chiniot incident wherein policemen allegedly beat and tortured women mercilessly. He ordered an inquiry and directed police high-ups to submit a complete report within 24 hours. “All those responsible for the incident will be dealt with sternly,” Shahbaz Sharif said, while ordering a team of police officials to be sent to Chiniot to carry out impartial investigations of the incident.
Earlier, an intelligence agency had prepared a report of the incident in which two SHOs and 25 police personnel were held responsible for torturing women who were protesting against the murder of a relative on his wedding day.
According to the report, Chiniot City SHO Sheikh Tahir and Sadr SHO Zafar Ahmad were responsible for the cruel behaviour towards the protesting women. The report said DPO Shahzad Akbar had ordered the police to remove the protesting women from the road and said all family members of the deceased were criminals. The report revealed that no case was registered against the deceased Anwar Ali in Chiniot district.
According to reports, Chiniot police on Saturday tortured women who were protesting against the murder of a groom because of firing by a constable, Nasrullah. The women placed the body of the deceased Anwar Ali in front of the office of the district police officer to pressurise the district administration to take steps to bring the culprits to justice.
