• LHWs protest killing of polio field workers

      Islamabad: Breaking a heavy cordon by police, dozens of lady health workers on Saturday entered the Red Zone on the Constitution Avenue in Islamabad to protest the nationwide killing of polio vaccinators.

      Shouting slogans against the government for failing to provide them with security during anti-polio campaigns, they first gathered outside the National Press Club and then marched towards the Parliament House and the Prime Minister’s Secretariat before staging a sit-in there.

      They condemned the attacks on polio vaccinators in Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and held the government responsible for it.

      The protesters said that they won’t carry out anti-polio campaigns until proper security was provided to them.

      A protester r said that if police couldn’t provide security to 106,000 countrywide lady health workers, then they should be given training on how to protect themselves against terrorists.

      “This will help us all efficiently discharge the vaccination duty,” she said.

      The protesters demanded early arrest of and exemplary punishment to the killers of vaccinators and payment 0f compensation and jobs to their families. Also during the sit-in, the lady health workers called for better, timely payment of wages and regularisation of services, and threatened to continue with the protest until their demands were met.
