Bridge on Indus to shorten
January 11, 2007
ISLAMABAD: President Pervez Musharraf is likely to perform the groundbreaking of a bridge over the river Indus connecting Larkana with Khairpur district on January 19.
The bridge, costing Rs 990 million, will be two-lane with a carriageway width of 9.3m and half New Jersey-type guardrails on each side. Its length will be 1,222 metres. The road between the bunds on the river Indus will be 14km.
The length of the approach road on the left bank up to N-5 will be 34km. While the approach road on the right bank will be 9km. The land canal bridge will be 60 metres.
Training/guide bunds will be 3.8km long. The distance between Sukkur and Hyderabad is approximately 370km. The Moro-Dadu bridge on the river Indus is 160km from Hyderabad and around 210km from Sukkur. Obviously, only a single river crossing over a span of 370km is extremely inadequate.
In order to accelerate development pace, more communication links across the river Indus are needed. One such link has been identified between district Khairpur (left bank) and Larkana (right bank).
Vehicular traffic from Khairpur on the National Highway (N-5) presently traverses through the Sukkur bypass covering a distance of 116km from Khairpur to Larkana. Construction of the bridge at the location mentioned above will make it more attractive for the traffic downstream of Sukkur to use the proposed new facility. After construction of this bridge, the distance between Khairpur and Larkana will come down to 59.5km.
Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad Khan and Chief Minister Dr Arbab Ghulam Rahim along with federal and provincial ministers and thousands of local people will attend the function.
The proposed project starts near a point about 1.5km from Tando Masti Khan on (re-aligned) N-5 and enters the bunds of the Indus and terminates at about 1km from Baqrani on Moenjodaro Baqrani Road. The Sindh government has approved the above-mentioned alignment of the proposed bridge. A hydraulic model study was completed in September 2006.
Traffic counts and origin destination survey were carried out in June 2006 for two different stations. Average daily traffic at Lakhi and Dadu-Moro bridge was determined as 8,179 and 1,870 vehicles respectively. PC-1 for the project was cleared by the Central Development Working Party (CDWP) in its meeting held on October 19, 2006 for approval by Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec).
Construction of the new bridge will greatly benefit the road users by reduction in road distance between Larkana and Khairpur from 116km to 59.5km and reduction in vehicle operating cost.
An amount of Rs 200 million is available for this project in Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) 2006-07.
