Islamabad: Dozens of affected people of the Kurri village on Monday attacked the venue of the groundbreaking ceremony of the Park Enclave, forcing the Capital Development Authority (CDA) not to mobilise its machinery for starting the development work.
Earlier, the inauguration of development work at the Park Enclave was performed by Prime Minister’s Task Force on Islamabad Chairman Faisal Sakhi Butt and CDA Chairman Farkhand Iqbal, but they had to leave the venue along with guests and officials before the machinery could be mobilised for starting the development work.
More than 100 protesters, who earlier held a demonstration at the crossing near the venue of the function, reached the spot and started hitting the canopy where the function was arranged. The event was called off before Faisal Sakhi Butt could deliver his speech. “It was a pre-planned act by some people as we had already talked to the local people,” a senior official of the CDA said.
Some CDA officers escaped from the scene on motorbikes of their subordinates as the mob turned rowdy. The protesters, who were carrying banners, jumped over bulldozers and other heavy machinery, compelling the CDA to delay the start of development work. “Compensate us first, then start development work at the Park Enclave,” one of the banners read.
However, the organisers prevented the clash-like situation as they asked the police contingent present on the occasion not to use force against the protesting villagers of Kurri whose hopes for getting compensation were dashed over one year back with a scam of alleged issuance of fake allotment letters to fake affected people. The scam also involved the then CDA director (land), who is currently under suspension. An inquiry by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) is pending against him, while an FIA inquiry against him and other officials is in the process.
