PESHAWAR: A project titled ‘Livestock for Life’ was launched in five districts of
the province to prevent Zoonotic diseases, which are communicable from animals to humans.
The Relief International, with the support of the livestock, health and education departments, would run the projects in Peshawar, Mardan, Swabi, Chitral and Lower Dir districts. Under the project, capacity-building workshops for poultry and dairy farmers and butchers would be arranged. The first workshop was arranged at the Peshawar Press Club, where Dr Zia Haider, Dr Khalid Khan, Syed Asad Ali Shah, Fakhruddin and others made presentations.
The speakers said that apart from capacity building and vaccination, research would also be carried out about Zoonotic diseases.
They said a memorandum of understanding to this effect would be signed with the Agricultural University, Peshawar and the students of Gomal University, Dera Ismail
Khan would be provided financial assistance for pursuing their MPhil and PhD programmes.
They said a model slaughterhouse and butcher shop would be set up in each district where the project is being launched and the people involved would be sensitised about cleanliness.
