Rs 3.43m earmarked for education in rural areas

Under a stipend programme, initiated by Sindh Middle School Project, around Rs 3.43 million has been earmarked for female students, under its “Enhancement for Teaching Profession” in rural, urban slum and underdeveloped areas of Sindh, for the year 2001-2002.
Elucidating details of the Programme, Project Manager SMSP Mrs Talat Jaskani said it was initiated with the financial collaboration of Asian Development Bank in 1997. “According to an agreement, a total of 1,500 girls students, studying in first year and Certificate of Teaching (CT) would receive Rs 3412.50 annually under the programme,” she informed and added that 1,006 female students would get the enhancement stipend this year. Students from all over the province including major cities would be selected for the stipend according to criteria set by the authorities, she informed. In addition to the stipend programme for enhancement of teaching profession, around Rs 37.046 million has already been approved for female students, studying at middle schools in rural, slum and undeveloped areas of Sindh, for the year 2001-2002. It is designed to encourage female students, residing in rural, slum and underdeveloped areas of the province, who are unable to pursue education owing to financial constraints, she informed. Since 1997, their stipend programme has encouraged over 16,485 female students to enroll themselves in middle schools for post-primary education, she added.To achieve the target to provide financial assistance to 23,850 girls students, remaining 7,365 female students would be given Rs 37.046 millions for the academic session 2001-2001 starting from January 2002, she informed.
