Health dept can’t ban reuse of canisters, SHC told

Imposing a ban on the re-use of canister/tins is not within the ambit of the health department, Secretary Health submitted in his comments on petition against re-use of tins in cooking oil and ghee products.
Petitioner Mohammad Imran Shahzad submitted that private cooking oil companies were using sub-standard food items packing material, endangering the lives of the public at large and re-used tins in packing of its products despite ban by the government.
He sought declaration against re-use of tins in cooking oil and ghee products and prayed the court to direct the authority concerned to take action against the culprits found indulging in such practices.
Filing comments on the petition, the Secretary, Health, submitted that sub-standard and used canister/tins for packing of the cooking oil and others edible items can cause abdominal disease, i.e gastro enteritis, food poisoning etc depending upon the un-hygienic and contaminated condition of that particular canisters/tins.
The Health Secretary, Syed Hashim Raza Zaidi, submitted that regulation and quality control (health), the CDGK was empowered to take action against adulteration, contaminated food/drink manufactured and sold in the ambit of CDGK under the Pure Food Ordinance, 1960, and the Sindh Pure Food Rules, 1965 for purpose of checking adulteration in food and drink article and confirmation of the standard of the food and drinks, authorized persons take suspected samples according to the said rules.
Misuse of funds: The SHC issued notices to the secretary, livestock and fisheries department, Karachi Fish Harbour Authority and others on petition against misuse of fisheries funds.
