Ahmed Shah panel sweeps Arts Council’s polls

Despite all efforts and vocal speeches, famous actor Omar Sharif and his team representing Shahr-e-Quaid Panel (SQP) cut a poor figure and instead all the nominated representatives of Ahmad Shah-Ejaz Faroqui Panel (ASEFP) won the elections of Arts Council of Pakistan (Karachi) by securing more than 70 per cent votes over the SQP candidates.
Muhammad Ahmad Shah secured 2001 votes to be elected as President against his rival Omar Sharif who managed 1064 votes. Prof Ejaz Faruqi was elected as Secretary by receiving 1995 votes against his opponent Syed Azfar Rizvi of SQP who secured 1010 votes.
Mehmood Ahmed Khan of ASEFP was elected as Vice President (1700 votes) against his opponent Rizwan Siddiqui (1099 votes). ASEFP’s Muhammad Amin Yousuf secured 1903 votes and elected as Joint Secretary against his rival Khalid Arain (1130 votes).
Dr Huma Mir of ASEFP won the Treasurer’s slot by securing 1645 votes. Her rival Najmuddin Shaikh received 1418 votes.
Similarly, all the ASEFP candidates won the governing body seats. They are: Prof Sahar Ansari (2054 votes), Fatima Surria Bajia (2044 votes), Shehnaz Siddiqui (1890 votes), Farhad Zaidi (1889 votes), Dr Qaiser Sajid (1887 votes), Athar Waqar Azeem (1867 votes), Qudsia Akbar (1835 votes), Naqqash Kazimi (1811 votes), Majeed Abadani (1772), Iqbal Latif (1761 votes) and Sa’adat Jafferey (1714 votes).
Meanwhile, Governor Sindh Dr Ishratul Ebad Khan congratulated the newly-elected President of Arts Council Muhammad Ahmad Shah and hoped that he and other office-bearers and the governing body members would work for the betterment of the Arts Council members as well as for the promotion of arts and culture in the city.
Besides, various city writers and artists including Shahid Hameed, Mukhtar Haider, Jazib Qureshi, Abdul Haie, Ahsan Saleem, Dr Manzoorul Hasan, Zafar Mehmood, Chitra Pretam, Sadiqa Fatimi, Ameen Qasimani, Aneel Chaudhri, Ghalib Baqar, Mazhar Hussain, Abdul Hameed, Abbas Commander and Qamar

Afzal Qamar greeted the newly elected body and expressed the hope that they would take care of the interests of all the members of Arts Council as well as for the promotion of arts and cultural activities.
