‘Polio virus being exported from Karachi’

Karachi
Secretary Health Sindh Rizwan Ahmed has said that the polio virus exported from Karachi has caused infections abroad.
“We need to fight this disease jointly. Any failure in this fight would mean an end to foreign aid for us,” he said, addressing a meeting of union councils’ supervisors (medical officers) for the polio eradication campaign scheduled to be held from October 24 to 26.
The Executive District Officer (EDO), Health, Dr Nasir Javed, World Health Organisation (WHO) representative Jamil Yousuf, and Unicef representative Dr Yahya were also present in the meeting held at the Civic Centre.
Rizwan Ahmed said 41 percent of the teams were out of the field during the last several campaigns for the eradication of polio but 100 percent payments were made.
“Time has come that we give something to our nation by saving our children from the polio virus so that they may live their lives without any disability.
“By implementing the National Emergency Plan we can control polio. The ongoing world programme for eradication of polio would also come to an end if we fail to deliver now.”
Speaking on this occasion, WHO representative Jamil Yousuf said five towns in Karachi — Gadap, SITE, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Saddar and Orangi — were termed polio high risk towns. Some of the people were not cooperating with the anti-polio teams, he said.
The EDO, Health, Dr Nasir Javed, said that under the new strategy instead of zonal supervisors, doctors were deputed as union council supervisors or medical officers in each union council.
Every union council supervisor would prepare a micro-plan for his union council and political and social persons had also been taken on board to get positive results out of the coming campaign, he added.
