Minor girl hurt in blast

October 16, 2010

PESHAWAR: A minor girl was injured and two small houses were destroyed when an explosive device planted near the office of political agent of Khyber Agency on Bara Road went off here on Friday.
The blast was so powerful that it shook the entire Cantonment area and people preparing for Friday prayers ran in panic. Some people sustained minor injuries when hit by pieces of smashed windowpanes in the vicinity.
“It was a huge blast that shook our building. We first saw smoke and then vehicles of security forces arriving at the spot to secure the area,” said the security guard of a nearby office. Authorities first said it was a gas cylinder blast. It was triggered by explosives, an official later admitted requesting anonymity. But police officials still believe it was not a sabotage attempt.
Information Minister Mian Iftikhar Hussain said the blast was caused by explosives. “People need not to be panicked as it was a minor blast. Only a minor girl has been injured,” Mian Iftikhar told reporters at the site of the blast.
“This was a bomb blast. May Allah curse those who are doing this,” said a woman in the neighbourhood, adding that some locals saw a boy running a few moments before the blast. “We haven’t found any evidence either of use of explosives or of gas cylinders. It is not a sabotage attack,” said Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Operations Ijaz Ahmad.
Another official said the explosion was probably that of the sewerage tank in the area as one such incident had already been reported in Spina Warai area in the recent past. The dwellers of the slums were afraid after the explosion. They suspected it might be an attempt to target the PA House or office, adding, the blast was triggered because the explosives could not be placed at the right place due to extraordinary security.
Security was further beefed up around the office and residence of PA Khyber on Bara Road after the incident. The office and spacious residence of

the administrative head of Khyber Agency is located in Peshawar, miles away from its area of jurisdiction. The Khyber House and PA office had received several threats after the military operation was launched in the Khyber Agency.
