Several held in connection with scholar’s murder
MARDAN: Several suspected persons were arrested Sunday as two teams were formed to probe the assassination of Dr Mohammad Farooq Khan, police sources said.
Dr Farooq, a religious scholar and Islamic University Swat vice-chancellor, was assassinated along with his assistant Saleem Khan by unidentified armed men who stormed into his clinic in Mardan on Saturday.
The police sources said Deputy Inspector General of Police, Mardan Region, Abdullah Khan had constituted two police parties supervised by Superintendents of Police in charge of investigation for Mardan and Swabi districts. The teams have started the probe into the case, added the sources.
Meanwhile, politicians, doctors, bureaucrats, lawyers, social workers and activists of different parties and hundreds of common people came to the residence of late Dr Farooq Khan to offer fateha for the departed soul.
The visitors included Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Owais Ahmed Ghani, Senior Minister Bashir Ahmed Bilor, Minister for Environment and Forests Wajid Ali Khan. They offered condolence to his family members.
Qul for Dr Farooq will be observed today at 130 Sector D, Sheikh Maltoon Town in Mardan. Different associations of doctors will stage a protest rally today at the Mardan Medical Complex to condemn the murder.
