Aitzaz warns of ‘flood of diseases’

September 17, 2010

Former Supreme Court Bar Association president and PPP leader Aitzaz Ahsan has called for early provision of medical facility in the flood-hit areas, saying the ëflood of diseasesí will follow the flood of water.
Speaking at a press conference here on Thursday, Aitzaz urged legal fraternity to come forward for the help of the flood affectees and join hands with doctors under the banner of the Pakistan Medical Association.
He said formal letters had already been sent to presidents of all bar associations in the country, to appeal to the ëblack coatsí to join the efforts of ëwhite coatsí.
He said there was nothing the lawyers could do directly to attend to people’s medical needs but they should, at least, encourage and support our brothers and sisters in the medical field.
He said 20 per cent of the nation had had been, directly or indirectly, affected or displaced and millions of children were in need of immediate medical care and protection from epidemic and disease. “Duty, once again, has called for us to step up and do our bit at this juncture of dire need,” he said.
Ahsan told the media that he had a meeting with Pakistan Medical Association president Dr. Tipu Sultan, adding that they both had agreed to make a national call for collaboration of doctors and lawyers - a kind of joint efforts of white coats and black coats.
He said the PMA and its members were providing sterling and critically important services to flood victims throughout the flood-afflicted areas as they were working day and night to reach out to the sick and the infirm. Sometimes, at some places, the efforts of these dedicated doctors were seriously handicapped, he added.
He said doctors needed premises where they could set up medical camps for examinations, inoculation and prescription of medicines. He appealed to the bar associations to provide their premises to doctors so that they could set up temporary medical camps to attend the hapless

flood victims.
He said that the first ëblack coat-white coat medical campí was opened in Thattha during Eid holidays with cooperation of president Thatta bar. He said medical camps would soon be established in Dera Ghazi Khan, Taunsa Sharif, Jalapura Pirwala, Jand, Piplan, Jacobabad, Badin, Nawabshah, Naushero Feroz, Ghotki and Khairpur by PMA.
Replying to a question about contribution of Pervez Musharraf relief fund, Ahsan said there was a time when name of Musharraf used to infuriate him but now the name made him laugh. Musharraf should come back immediately, he said in a sarcastic way.
