LAHORE: PML President Ch Shujaat Hussain and Chief Minister Ch Pervaiz Elahi called on President Pervez Musharraf at the Army Guest House Saturday.

Sources in the ruling party said the meeting continued for about three hours. During the meeting various issues including political situation, local government system, law and order situation, the forthcoming general election and the PML party election came under discussion.

Shujaat briefed President Musharraf about preparations being made for the party elections and existing political scenario of the country keeping in view the next general election.

The chief minister explained to President Musharraf about reforms introduced by the provincial government in police department, agriculture, health and education sectors. He also briefed the president about Rs 100 billion development budget for the year 2006-07.

The president directed the chief minister to maintain situation of law and order in the province and ensure the protection of lives and property of the people. While appreciating Pervaiz for allocation of huge amount for the development sector in the budget, the president directed him to ensure provision of basic facilities to the masses.

He also asked him to focus on the development of backward areas of the province, so that living standard of the people in these areas could be elevated. The president also directed the chief minister to strengthen the local government system.
