June 23, 2006

SUKKUR: The chairman of the Board of Governors of the Ghulam Muhammad Mahar Medical College, Sukkur, Niaz Ahmed Dahar, has constituted a five-member committee to conduct an inquiry into the death of a pregnant woman, who had been admitted to the Civil Hospital.

The committee, comprising Dr Sarfraz Khan as its chairman, Dr Hazoor Bux Tunio as secretary and G Ali Abbas Chachar, Dr Sabir Ali and Dr Nigar Fatima as members, has been directed to submit a report within two days so that disciplinary action could be taken.

Rahila, wife of Irfan Ali Mirani, was admitted to the hospital for delivery on Wednesday evening. During the night, she complained of pain and her attendants contacted the lady doctor on duty, Dr Monica. But Dr Monica, who was found to be sleeping in the duty room, scolded the attendants, asked them to go away and instructed the nurse on duty to give an injection to the patient.

Later, the blood pressure of the patient shot up, but in spite of repeated requests by the attendants, the lady doctor allegedly did not attend to her.
