Naveed, Dr Azra potential candidates for slot
ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) was still undecided on the question of who will head the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) as tie is between Syed Naveed Qamar and Dr Azra Fazal Pechuho.
According to sources, the government has communicated informally to Opposition Leader Syed Khursheed Shah to finalise names for who will head the PAC from the opposition as per Charter of Democracy but Shah has not yet made any decision in this regard.
Election for the chairman of the PAC is expected to be held by the end of the next week. Sources said the PPP had considered the name of Dr Azra Afzal Pechuho as chairperson of the PAC. Dr Pechuho could be the first woman to head the PAC in the parliamentary history.
The sources said the opposition leader is likely to consult former President Asif Zardari before making any decision.Syed Naveed Qamar, a former federal minister who has been wining the elections of the National Assembly since 1990, is an experienced person.
Dr Azra Afzal Pechuho is a sister of Zardari and had already served as chairperson of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Defence during the PPP government.Interestingly, the PPP will the charge of the PAC at a time when accounts of its government are set to be scrutinised.
