TOBA TEK SINGH: Hundreds of farmers belonging to Kabirwala, Shorkot and Kamalia took out a rally to condemn waterlogging caused by the Trimmu-Sidhnai Link Canal.
The rally PML-N MPA Mian Muhammad Rafiq started from Shorkot Cantonment and reached the city on tractor-trolleys, vans and motorcycles. The protesters marched on various roads and reached the TMA offices on Jhang Road where a public meeting was held. Addressing the protesters, MPA Mian Muhammad Rafique, Kabirwala Union Council former nazim Altaf Bhatti, Shorkot former councillor Mehr Chiragh Sargana, former nazim Mian Ijaz Kathia, Shorkot Kissan Board president Noor Ahmad Sargana, Siddiq Gujjar and Shafqat Rasool said that water-logging had destroyed their lands and they were unable to sow crops as water was flowing through their fields. Mian Rafiq said that on his request, Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif had approved lining of the canal, but red-tapism had created hurdles and work could not be started.
Through a resolution, the protesters demanded the chief minister start the construction of approved lining of canal, not to exceed approved water supply of 500 cusecs in the canal and implement orders of allotment of land to dozens of landless growers belonging to Pirmahal villages, which was announced in 1998 by then prime minister Nawaz Sharif during his visit to Pirmahal. They also prayed for the recovery of Malala Yousafzai. PML-Q forward bloc MPA from Shorkot Mehr Khalid Sargana was also present. MPA from Khanewal Ghulam Jaffar joined the rally in Kabirwala.
