Despite the recent monsoon rains, many areas of Pakistan are in the midst of a prolonged drought. Crop yields have plummeted, cattle are dying and the agricultural lands are parched. The drought has aggravated Pakistan’s long-running water shortage issues, placing a greater strain on already stressed fresh water resources. Amidst this growing crisis, the concerned authorities have been largely absent. There is an urgent need to implement new technologies with regard to water storage and irrigation as less rainfall calls for more efficient water management strategies.
Furthermore, a significant portion of our fresh water is rendered unusable due to pollution. In this context, it is pertinent for the environmental ministry to coordinate with institutions such as Wapda in order to confront the water crisis and ensure Pakistan has as much water available as possible.
