Non-holding of party elections: ECP serves notice on PM

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) Thursday issued a show cause notice to Prime Minister Imran Khan for not holding intra-party elections as chairman of the ruling party.

According to the notice, under Section 208 of the Elections Act 2017, political party officials are required to hold intra-party elections at the federal, provincial and local levels every five years.

In the show cause notice issued by the deputy director, the Election Commission sought a reply from Prime Minister Imran Khan within 14 days.

The notice said under Section 208 of the Elections Act 2017, political party officials were required to hold intra-party elections at the federal, provincial and local levels every five years.

It said under Section 209, political parties had to submit a certificate of completion within seven days of intra-party elections.

The notice said under Section 215 (one), a political party could get election symbol for federal, provincial assemblies and local body elections only on submission of certificate.

It was informed that the PTI was to provide details of intra-party elections to the Election Commission on June 13, 2021, but this had not been done so far.
