Windless rain

By Paul Hamilton Hayne

The rain, the desolate rain!

Ceaseless, and solemn, and chill!

How it drips on the misty pane,

How it drenches the darkened sill!

O scene of sorrow and dearth!

I would that the wind awaking

To a fierce and gusty birth,

Might vary this dull refrain

Of the rain, the desolate rain:

For the heart of heaven

seems breaking

In tears o’er the fallen earth,

And again, again, again,

We list to the sombre strain,

The faint, cold monotone—

Whose soul is a mystic moan—

Of the rain, the mournful rain,

The soft, despairing rain!

Transformation

By Ayesha Malik

In the wake of my nightmare

I surpass a threshold unaware

The random paths abruptly converge

All the horrors, pains submerge

I stand disembodied in the lurch

A prick keeps shining in the birch

A close look reveals not a thorn

A nest saved from the storm

The sparrows twitter away the gloom

Rejuvenating after the doom

How frail is the human soul

It cannot rejoice in the whole

Dwells on the pain too ardently

osing moments spent happily

I turn away from the birch

To find my own perch

My abode in a terrestrial world

Elated and serene, out of the herd.

A corner in my head

By Tahreem Asghar

All the day’s hours I spend

Crawled in a corner in my head

My knees press against my chest

Lying like this, the day passes like the rest

No door does this place has

No window to see the crippling dusk

My breaths go shallow and the air numb

I scream but back at me my voice comes

All the day’s hours I spend

Crawled in a corner in my head

The floor is flooded with yesterday’s tears

My eyes can no longer see, my ears can no longer hear

Darkness

By Tahreem Asghar

I walk in the street

And darkness is all there is

I feel a being is lost

But the mist is all that there is

I reach my hand out

But no hand touches me

A being is lost in the fog

Now darkness is all there is

I hear someone sob

Through the fog that there is

I call out loud

But no being calls out to me

A being is crying amid the fog

Now darkness is all there is

There stands a mirror in the dark

But I can’t see me

I reach my hand out

But no hand touches me

I’m lost in the fog

Now darkness is all there is
