In the 1930s, Finland had one of the worst child mortality rates in Europe. However, today, things are completely different and the situation has improved drastically. Women in Finland have been found to be among the happiest in the world because of the welfare-oriented policies of the government.
Among these policies was the introduction of a free baby box containing essential items for the newborn. The Finnish government has been giving this box to every new mother for the past 75 years. The box acts like a baby crib with a mattress at the bottom, a blanket and a number of sheets for the blanket and mattress. It is used to help keep the newborn baby warm and clean. A similar scheme can help us reduce our own child mortality rate and achieve one of the targets of the MDGs.
