Politics of the operation

The spat between the centre and the Sindh government on the one hand and between the two major stakeholders in Sindh – the PPP and the MQM – on the other hand has shown that our political leadership is more interested in safeguarding their personal interests than caring about the law and order situation in Karachi and the wellbeing of people. Both the PPP and the MQM expressed satisfaction over the working of the Rangers as long as the parties remained out of the purview of the targeted operation in Karachi. But as soon as some of their leaders were targeted they started airing reservations.

The two political parties should support the Rangers for restoring peace in the provincial metropolis Karachi. The paramilitary force has done a great job. The ground gained cannot be lost to the political whims of any party. There is an elected provincial assembly and other means to settle political grievances which, no doubt, have some credibility. However, the Karachi operation should be carried to its logical end.
