This refers to the article, ‘Pakistan’s debt to Ahmed Rabbani’ (December 13) by Imran Khan. Imran Khan has done a commendable job in highlighting the plight of Ahmed Rabbani, a taxi driver in Karachi who was mistakenly arrested and is now in Guantanamo Bay. Khan has vowed to fight for Ahmed Rabbani with the help of British human rights activists – Clive Stafford Smith and Barrister Shehzad Akbar.
As pointed out in the article, Rabbani is a Pakistani citizen and it is his fundamental right to solicit the help of his government in securing his release. The government should heed Khan’s appeal. It has now become obligatory on the government and human right activists to take up Rabbani’s cause. Nobody can give back Rabbani those 13 years he spent in illegal captivity but getting him justice even at this belated stage will be a positive step.
